Dealer buyer guide
Can a China-spec EV be registered in Germany?
Direct answer
Sometimes, but not automatically. A China-market variant must satisfy the applicable German approval and registration requirements. A model sharing a name with an EU-sold vehicle is not proof that the China-spec unit has EU type approval.
Procurement verification checklist
| Check | Record to obtain |
|---|---|
| Before deposit | Written feasibility assessment for the exact VIN and variant |
| Approval evidence | EU CoC if valid for the unit, otherwise assessment of individual approval |
| Technical gaps | List tests, modifications, exceptions and unresolved issues |
| Commercial decision | Budget for assessment and potential refusal; do not assume a nameplate proves approval |

Practical steps
- Before buying, send the exact VIN, variant, original registration documents and technical data to a German technical service and the intended registration authority. Ask whether a valid EU Certificate of Conformity covers this unit.
- If EU approval evidence is absent, obtain a written assessment of the individual-approval route, required tests, modifications, exceptions, expected costs and the possibility of refusal.
- Separately verify charging, lighting, software, service access and spare parts. A charging adapter does not establish vehicle approval.
- Prepare ownership, customs and insurance records and the required technical evidence. The registration authority makes the final decision; keep its written checklist.
Evidence and limits
Approval documents must match the exact vehicle.
Ask for approval feasibility before shipping, not after arrival.
Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority, technical service and carrier for the exact VIN and destination before purchase or shipment.
