How to inspect the battery health of a used electric car

Direct answer

Use a dated, vehicle-linked battery assessment alongside service records, fault checks and a physical inspection. A displayed range or a single state-of-health number is not a complete condition report.

Practical steps

  1. Request the VIN, odometer, first-registration date, service and repair history, battery warranty terms and known battery replacements. Compare dates and mileage across the records.
  2. Have a qualified technician inspect the pack exterior and underbody for damage or repair evidence and read diagnostic trouble codes. Do not open the high-voltage battery as part of a buyer check.
  3. Request the diagnostic or independent battery report, including test method, tool, date, conditions and limitations. Distinguish the BMS estimate from a measured capacity test.
  4. Review charging behaviour and any available capacity assessment together. Record unresolved faults and obtain a repair or rejection decision before contracting.

Evidence and limits

Ask whether an independent test supports this exact model and battery.

A report describes the test date; it does not guarantee future capacity. Missing evidence must be recorded as unavailable, not as a pass.

Confirm current requirements with the relevant authority, technical service and carrier for the exact VIN and destination before purchase or shipment.
