Import EVs to
Spain

Spain is commonly served through Valencia and Barcelona. Budget for the 10% base customs duty, 21% VAT, any manufacturer-specific EU countervailing duty on China-origin BEVs, port handling, ITV, approval and registration costs. Check the exact model's homologation and current incentive eligibility before purchase.

MARKET OVERVIEW

What importers need to plan

01

Import and tax treatment

Use a 10% EU passenger-car customs-duty baseline and Spain's 21% standard VAT for initial planning. China-origin battery-electric vehicles may also be subject to a manufacturer-specific EU countervailing duty of 7.8% to 35.3%; verify the producer, vehicle scope and current TARIC treatment before customs clearance. Proof of payment or exemption for the applicable registration tax is required during registration.

02

EV incentives

Spanish EV support is programme-, budget- and call-dependent. A vehicle must meet the current MOVES eligibility conditions and appear in the relevant IDAE eligible-vehicle database where required. Confirm the active programme, price cap, applicant and registration conditions before relying on support.

03

Used-vehicle policy

Used imports require customs clearance, the original registration documents, proof of ownership, EU conformity or individual approval evidence, an ITV inspection and proof of registration-tax payment or exemption. Confirm translations and provincial registration requirements for the exact vehicle.

04

Certification

Spain requires current EU homologation and a Certificate of Conformity, or the applicable individual approval route. A vehicle without a valid CoC may need a reduced technical sheet, adaptations, additional approval and ITV inspection before registration.

05

Charging compatibility

Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC are the European compatibility target. A China-market GB/T vehicle requires a verified charging solution and must not compromise type approval or registration eligibility.

06

Shipping route

Typical entry points: Valencia; Barcelona. Indicative China-to-port transit: 30–45 days.

Important planning notice
