Import EVs to
France

France is served through Le Havre and Marseille-Fos. Budget for 10% base customs duty, 20% VAT, any manufacturer-specific EU countervailing duty on China-origin BEVs, port handling, approval and registration. Confirm the environmental-score eligibility list before presenting any purchase incentive to the buyer.

MARKET OVERVIEW

What importers need to plan

01

Import and tax treatment

Use a 10% EU passenger-car customs-duty baseline and France's 20% standard VAT for initial planning. China-origin battery-electric vehicles may also be subject to a manufacturer-specific EU countervailing duty of 7.8% to 35.3%; verify the producer, vehicle scope and current TARIC treatment before customs clearance. Registration taxes, environmental charges and exemptions depend on the exact vehicle and current rules.

02

EV incentives

France continues support for eligible new 100% electric passenger cars in 2026, but eligibility depends on the official environmental score and current programme conditions. Only models on the official eligible list qualify; confirm the model, applicant, purchase price and current support amount before contracting.

03

Used-vehicle policy

Used imports require customs clearance, proof of ownership, the foreign registration document, conformity evidence or an RTI decision, technical inspection where applicable, insurance and French registration. Confirm the exact vehicle's environmental and registration treatment before shipment.

04

Certification

An EU Certificate of Conformity or recognized EU type approval provides the normal registration route. A vehicle without recognized conformity may require individual approval (RTI) through the competent DREAL or DRIEAT, technical tests and modifications before registration.

05

Charging compatibility

Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC are the European compatibility target. A China-market GB/T vehicle requires a verified charging solution and must not compromise type approval or registration eligibility.

06

Shipping route

Typical entry points: Le Havre; Marseille-Fos. Indicative China-to-port transit: 30–45 days.

Important planning notice

Rates and policy summaries are indicative, not customs, legal or tax advice. Confirm the exact vehicle classification, eligibility, fees and documents with the relevant authority or licensed local broker before purchase or shipment.
