Industry Update The International Energy Agency reports that sales of used electric cars across China, five major European markets and the United States surpassed 3 million units in 2025, approximately 35% higher than in 2024. The second-hand channel is increasingly important because it lowers the upfront cost of EV ownership and allows vehicles leaving company fleets and leases to reach a broader consumer base. Across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, electric cars represented roughly 4% of used-car transactions in 2025, up from only 1% in 2021. Germany recorded around 400,000 used electric-car sales, equivalent to slightly more than 6% of its used-car market. At the same time, average BEV value retention across the five markets fell from about 50% in 2022 to 35% in 2025, creating both affordability gains for buyers and residual-value risk for fleets and financiers. Key Numbers Used EV sales across major markets: more than 3 million in 2025. Growth versus 2024: approximately +35%. Used EV share in five major European markets: roughly 4%. Germany: around 400,000 used EV transactions in 2025. Business Implication The scale-up of the secondary EV market supports export and remarketing opportunities, but residual-value risk is now a core commercial variable. Reliable battery reports, after-sales support and realistic wholesale purchase prices can materially improve resale performance.
