What happened Europe’s used battery-electric vehicle market is showing clearer signs of demand recovery as the economic case for BEVs improves. Indicata’s 2026 analysis found that higher fuel prices strengthened consumer interest in used BEVs, reduced stock levels and supported a broad recovery in residual values in several major markets. Germany, France and the Netherlands responded particularly well, while Belgium and the United Kingdom continued to face residual-value pressure from policy-driven oversupply. Earlier Indicata market data showed the same direction of travel: used BEVs reached a record 5.51% share of passenger-car sales across the 13 monitored European markets in June. Their share was higher in younger vehicle cohorts, reaching 8.8% for cars up to four years old and 10.7% for cars up to two years old. Inventory is becoming more liquid The improvement in demand was reflected in Market Days’ Supply, a measure of how many days current online inventory would cover at the prevailing sales rate. Indicata reported that used-BEV Market Days’ Supply fell from 105 days in May to 92 days in June. A decline in inventory days generally indicates faster stock turnover and a healthier balance between supply and demand. Why it matters For cross-border traders, the European market is increasingly differentiated by country. Markets with stronger consumer demand, higher fuel costs and better charging economics may absorb used BEVs faster, while countries with excess lease returns or manufacturer-supported nearly-new stock can remain under price pressure. Exporters should therefore avoid treating Europe as one uniform market and should track model-level turnover, local incentives, charging conditions, taxes and residual-value trends by destination. Key numbers Used BEV share of passenger-car sales: 5.51% across 13 monitored markets. Used BEV share for vehicles up to four years old: 8.8%. Used BEV share for vehicles up to two years old: 10.7%. Market Days’ Supply: improved from 105 days in May to 92 days in June. Indicata’s 2026 fuel-price analysis is based on daily monitoring of more than 14 million used-vehicle adverts.
Insights
Europe’s Used BEV Market Is Responding to Better Economics and Tighter Supply
Europe’s used BEV market is improving as lower ownership costs make electric cars more attractive, while tighter vehicle supply helps support resale values. Stronger demand and reduced inventory are contributing to a healthier and more balanced second-hand EV market.
